SEMINAR & WORKSHOP
February 3rd and
4th, 2020
PRESENTATION:
Concerns over global
health and environmental degradation has required progressive companies to
include sustainable development goalsin their strategic decision criteria. The
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda has been a driver
for promoting innovation for sustainability among several industrial sectors both locally and globally.
However, it is still not clear how to deal with the complexity of measuring the
positive impacts of SDG adoption to thewider society. Such difficulty is
partially due to differing interpretation as to what is meant by
impact as well as differences in socio-economic contexts in which innovation takes place, lack of
transparency, uncertainties, and tensions among social, environmental and
economic indicators. For example, in practice tensions exist between short-term
economic gains and long-term social and environmental benefits.
Nevertheless, there are synergies that arise from sustainability, such as the
financial value of stakeholder positive reactions to an organisation's
environmental efforts.
Additional difficulties are expected when dealing with ‘turbulent’ social and economic environments due to for example, the rise of fake news, political polarization, climate crises and controversial technology innovation. These turbulences affect the ways in which indicators attempt to convey information to industry and policy-makers.Although challenging, measuring the impact of the adoption of SDGs by companies is crucial for more effective organisational management and public policy development.

As a part of a project supported
by the University Global Partnership Network (UGPN) and organised by the
University of Surrey (UK) and the University of São Paulo (Brazil), this
workshop aims
at identifying what, why and how to measure the impact of SDGs implementation
by industry, as well as clarifying the meaning of impact.
